Nutritional Supplement

How do you choose a nutritional supplement for your life? Picking the right one can have tremendous benefits to you, but choosing the wrong one can mean a lot of wasted money for little or no change. Here are some tips in choosing a supplement that is right for you:

1.    Check the label. A good supplement will contain all the necessary information about what nutrients are in the vitamin and how much of each. The company’s information will also be there – name, address, contact information, etc. Manufacturing dates and recommended dosages should also be somewhere on the label.
2.    Look at the brand. Your brand should be accessible enough that they can provide you with information pertaining to their quality control and other tests and evaluations. If they accommodate your inquiries, they should be a good brand to depend on.
3.    Study your supplements. Plenty of information is available about what supplements are ideal for your body and age. Make sure you know what they are and that the supplement is addressing them.

While this may look like a lot of work, it generally is a one-time thing. Once you’ve found a good, reliable manufacturer that gives you the nutritional supplements you need the most, you will have a partner for life that will keep you healthy for years.

Kids’ fitness made simple

Kids these days face more health challenges than we did. Sure, we contended with polio, smallpox, deadly strains of influenza and a dozen other near-biological weapons. But as far as chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and asthma, we have nothing on today’s McDonald’s generation. Without a doubt, youth obesity is one of the single-most pressing public health issues of our time; our kids are eating more bad food and getting less exercise than ever. So what’s a parent, who isn’t around 24 hours a day to police what his or her children eat or don’t eat, supposed to do to prevent their child from getting on the ‘fat train?’

First, even though it is impossible to always prevent your child from eating junk food, which abounds around Dallas, it isn’t much work to teach your child how to make good decisions; when kids understand the consequences of their choices and truly understand the reality of those consequences, they are more likely to make the right choices – the ones with the best consequences. In the case of diet, good teaching means explaining why non-junk foods are better than junk foods – they make kids stronger, give them more energy, and will even help them to grow, which in turn makes them better-looking (girls respond better to this.) Other than that, the detrimental effects of bad-tasting foods can be underscored, but not so much that you demonize all unhealthy food. Unhealthy food does have a place at the table inasmuch as a good dessert can bring people together, or inasmuch as a donut can be a much-needed afternoon pick-me-up. In this sense, moderation is the one dietary rule that can be underscored that will help children make the right choices about what they eat.

Secondly, encouraging kids to get exercise beyond their regular-scheduled physical education classes is crucial to instilling the value that exercise leads to better health and an improved sense of well-being and happiness, which has been proven time and time again by research. Here in Dallas, kids karate presents an ideal way to ensure that your children are getting regular physical activity – and activity that they are sure to love. The applicability of karate for kids in a school setting is multi-faceted. First, knowledge of karate will give kids the tools they need to defend themselves against bullies if need. Second, regular activity and the achievement of goals will improve their sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Third, regular practice of discipline will make it easier for children to focus outside the classroom, and last, they are sure to avoid the obesity trap with all those regular punches and kicks!

Commodity Funds Market

August 22nd, 2008

The booming commodity funds market has become increasingly attractive to many investors, with hard assets such as oil and gold perhaps offering a safe hedge against the current inflation, as well as the double digit gains in the market that have been fast disappearing from the markets for stocks, bonds and real estate.

Undeterred by the kind of volatile downdrafts that have sent oil plummeting 4.5 percent very recently, only to settle at $104.48 a barrel, large commodity funds and rich individual investors have sent a burst of cash into this enigmatic market over the last year, tumbling records for new money flowing in.

Small investors are pushing in, as well, using dozens of new retail commodity funds to participate in markets that by one measure have jumped about 20 percent in the last six months and have almost doubled in six years.

However, this market, despite its sparkle, can offer risks of its own, including some dangerous faults that are impairing the ability of regulators to police marketing fraud and protect all investors. Commodities are also open to attack with to the same worries affecting all of Wall Street, where recently the Dow Jones industrial average plummeted almost 300 points, erasing more than two thirds of the previous steep gains.

In addition, the biggest venture’s and lenders in the commodities fund markets are some of the same giant hedge funds, commercial banks and brokerage houses that have been caught in the stormy weather of the equity, housing and credit markets.

As in those commodity fund markets, an dry up of credit could force some large investors (especially hedge funds speculating with much of the money being borrowed) to sell off their holdings, this will create price swings that will affect a host of marketplace prices and completely wipe out small investors in just a few minutes of trading.

Right now is a very scary time for commodity fund market regulators. It is not a question of over regulating or even under regulating. It is a question of just being deluged by volume, volatility and a dramatically scary shift toward speculative interests.

More Kids Party Ideas!

August 10th, 2008

Still thinking about the best theme for your kids party? Ideas are aplenty – here are some more to get your creative juices flowing:

·         A campout. Build a campfire and sing songs, roast marshmallows and hot dogs. This would be a great idea for a party at dusk. If it’s a sleepover party, all the kids could sleep in tents in the backyard, but that’s not necessary.

·         A circus. Have carnival games, a clown, and cotton candy! Try to replicate the atmosphere of a circus show for all the little ones!

·         Mystery. A lot of adults enjoy going to murder mystery-type dinner shows. Why not do something similar for the kids party? Ideas may not revolve around murder (could be a little grim for the kids) but something like “The Case of the Missing Birthday Cake” or something along those lines could be lots of fun for the kids.

·         Makeup party. Another one just for the girls – get some cheap lipstick, eye shadow, and blush, and let the girls beautify themselves!

These kids party ideas are still just a starting point to get your mind thinking. As you get more creative, you can come up with all sorts of ideas that we wouldn’t even think of!

If you’re a pet owner, you really appreciate the bond between an animal and its keeper. Dog, cat, fish, or turtle, animals demand love and respect because of their indifference towards human constructions – unless that construction involves gifts. Animals love gifts just as much as people and shouldn’t be deprived of the opportunity afforded to humans to be spoiled. But what kinds of gifts should you give to a pet and how do you distinguish it from the everyday pampering you probably give him or her because – if you’re reading this – you are definitely the type to pamper your pet?

Sometimes you have to give a dog a bone. Dogs love bones, but you can do better than that. Gourmet dog treats are made from recipes that are tried and true doggy favorites. Packed with liver and real meat, these treats are bound to wow any woofer while taking it easy on their tummies. All-natural ingredients, free of antibiotics, ensure that your doggy is getting the maximum nutrition and deliciousness in every bite without being pumped with the medicine that can be found in inferior treats. And what about some luxury? A pooch pillow or plush will give Fido a place to rest his head or else give him something to chew on in between walks and meals. And while you’re at it, why not treat yourself with a little a Dog Tails wine – it will help ease the headache you got from Fido chewing all the new furniture.

And don’t pity kitty. Cats love nothing more than a few plush toys infused with the seemingly narcotic catnip that’ll make even the most distrusting cat meow. Add to that a glove brush, some sparkling and jingling balls for the cat to kick, and an ultra comfortable plush color, and your cat will be cuddling with you for sure. Other pets may not be able to express their gratitude for such gifts in the same manner, but why not spoil them too: a new tank for turtle, or a new filter for fishy?

Of course, all these gifts are not only great for pets, but are especially great for their loving owners. Packing a few high quality pet products into a basket and dressing it up is sure to make any proud owner flattered not only that you remembered their pet but also that you share their fondness of their best friend. Perhaps pet gift baskets truly are man’s best friend.

Moving My Business to Costa Rica

June 30th, 2008

For a number of years I have been doing business in Costa Rica. I have established quite a few solid business contacts, a few personal friends and have found this small island country to be ripe for new business. There are many reasons to move a business to another country. The ease of doing business in countries unencumbered by rigid import and export regulations and tax laws are top reasons. I find that I will need to use corporate relocation services to move the whole company. Employees have been given the choice to stay in the United States or to move with us to Costa Rica. The majority are willing to make the move.

Moving to another country entails quite a bit of organization. Moving an entire business to another country requires knowing quite a bit about it. While I have been doing business there for several years there are still things I will need to learn. I am familiar with the many different climates of this beautiful tropical island. My employees however, are not. The function of a corporate relocation company is assist employees with selling their current home, finding a new home, learning about the area they are moving to and even finding assistance with packing their belongings and moving them.

Before we could physically move the business the tedious process of filling out government paperwork began. Luckily the Costa Rican government does not require as much as our own government. They have simplified their process to make the transition for corporate relocation much smoother. Each business type has different forms to fill out so contacting the Costa Rican government is necessary to ensure that you have filled out the correct paper work. They are friendly and helpful, as are all of the people there, generally speaking.

One of the other decisions we had to make was where we were going to locate our office. The little tropical island has very diverse climates. It is not all tropical beaches. There are rain and cloud forests, temperate areas and mountains. There are an estimated 27 different weather patterns. We chose the central area where the weather is more temperate. And the next step in corporate relocation was completed.

There are many little intricacies to the everyday life and culture of Costa Rica. Before making such a move I had to make sure that all of my employees who are going to make the transition with me were informed of the customs, culture and general laws of the country. It would make little sense for all the work involved in corporate relocation to have my employees unprepared. There are agencies set up within the country that will assist with relocation. It took several months to complete the preliminary work but we were ready to make the physical move. Our new offices had been constructed and furnished. We all had our passports, packed our lives and families and made the move successfully to Costa Rica.

How to Waterproof Your Deck

June 26th, 2008

Waterproofing the deck that your family barbecues on or that surrounds the pool is an important thing to do if you want your deck to stand up to the weather for a long time.  Warping and cracking will eventually happen to every deck made of wood, but what waterproofing will do is slow this process down quite considerably and the sealant will keep out most of the moisture that is placed upon it, whether it is rain, snow, or pool water.

If you wish to waterproof a new deck, it is best to wait at least 30 days before doing this, since the chemicals that the wood was treated with before installation need time to evaporate.  Give the wood time to adjust to the climate.  After you have waited this long, it is safe to begin the waterproofing process.

Start with cleaning off the surface of the deck and removing all debris.  Also remove all patio furniture and equipment such as barbecue grills.  The deck should be completely cleared off.  A deck cleaner can be bought at most hardware and home improvement stores.  Follow the instructions and you can apply this with a pump sprayer.  When it starts to foam, start scrubbing the deck with a stiff bristled brush.  This will make sure that the stains on the deck, almost no matter how stubborn they are, will come up.  Rinse it off completely with a garden hose, but make sure you have on eye protection to keep anything from spraying into your eyes.

This is the time to apply the sealant.  Spray it onto the deck with a pump sprayer or a roller.  Sometimes there will be puddles of sealant that will form and these need to be rolled out evenly over the deck.  Allow it to dry completely and after two days, you should be able to walk on it without damaging the seal.

When you apply sealant or any chemical to your deck, you should always wear eye and skin protection.

If you want to help keep your deck further waterproofed, you can drill some small holes into the areas of it that retain water on a regular basis.  These holes can be as small as 3/16 of an inch to even ¼ of an inch and they will not adversely affect the appearance of the wood very much.  They will, however, help keep the water drained.

Winter Water Pipe Protection

June 24th, 2008

There is scarce a more trying time on one’s new home than winter. One specifically difficult area to worry about is the water pipes in your house. Obviously, during the winter, it is important to keep these pipes shielded from the freezing temperatures; otherwise, you could have a very bad situation on your hands. This is all the more difficult if you are a first time homeowner.

If the water pipes in your home are not insulated and the temperature is less than 20 degrees, they are at serious risk of freezing and then bursting.  A seemingly insignificant crack of only one-eighth of an inch is enough to let 250 gallons of water leak out each day and cause significant water damage in your home.  Anything in the vicinity of this water is fair game, be it clothes, furniture, children’s toys, and other things of this nature. On top of soaked items in the home, this could cause danger to your home’s foundation, as the water can cause the foundation to rot, and any metal to rust. This is, of course, excluding the mold that would most certainly follow such a massive leak. The mold is considered by many the most dangerous of these afflictions brought on by water damage, as mold can be inhaled and cause serious health problems. While insurance companies do not cover damage caused by mold, they do, however, cover water damage to an extent.

It is important to know how to protect your home from these bursts. And one of the very first things to be done is to cover all indoor water pipes with insulation. You should make sure that warm air is capable of reaching your pipes during a deep freeze. This can be done by simply putting a space heater in the room with the pipes and opening the cabinets. But, be careful with those space heaters. If you leave them unattended for a long period of time, there is a chance for fire. And definitely do not keep them near anything easily flammable.  And it’s also important that you don’t used extension cords, as there is an increased risk for fire, and a fire is worse than burst pipes.

You should check your house for any cracks that water could leak into, because when the water freezes, it will expand and cause further damage. You should also be sure that you disconnect garden hoses and keep a small portion of water running through hot and cold water faucets.

Mold Health Effects

June 21st, 2008

Most people don’t realize just how dangerous mold can be if you live in a contaminated home or work in a contaminated building for prolonged periods of time.  Elevated levels of mold can cause some health complications that most people aren’t aware of and of course, some home sellers (whose homes for sale are sometimes contaminated) are skeptical.  They want proof, when there is quite a lot of evidence that proves that the mycotoxins produced by mold cause diseases in human beings.

The inhalation of a large amount of mold spores can cause significant health problems like allergy symptoms, asthma, colds, coughing incessantly, bleeding in the lungs (particularly in infants or pets), trouble breathing, and even cancer.  Problems with the central nervous system of a person are also known to be a problem.

Problems with vision, chronic or excessive fatique, mood swings, hives, headaches, sinus problems, tremors, trouble speaking, vomiting, and vertigo have been known to occur.  A recent study even shows that children who are exposed to molds and workers who are exposed to them in working environments are more likely to develop asthma.

A condition that affects the lungs like hypersensitivity pneumonitis is developed by inhaling the mold spores (or anything like dust or other fungus spores) for prolonged periods of time.  If the air conditions that cause the condition are not improved significantly or the person is not removed from the situation, the lungs can become irreparably damaged and cannot function.  This is one of many serious conditions that can be caused due to prolonged exposure to mold.

Basically, there are more health complications associated with mold than you can shake a stick at and most people don’t realize that there are this many problems associated with mold growing in their homes.  They think that it’s not that big of a deal and can afford to put off getting it removed from their homes or that they can’t afford to relocate until it is removed, but the fact is that if you’re a healthy adult, you might be able to hold up for a short period of time in these conditions before it starts to take its toll on you, but your baby, elderly relative living with you, or your pet very well may not.  It’s best not to take chances with your or your family’s health.  Do whatever is necessary to get out of the mold contaminated home or apartment or have it removed as soon as possible.

Aspergillosis and Its Forms

June 17th, 2008

Posted by admin in Fungus Growth, Mold Species | No Comments »

While some of us might know what causes mold to grow and what it can do to our bodies and buildings, we’re not exactly familiar with the different species of mold that exist in the world. Not all mold species grow effectively indoors, but aspergillus is a genus of mold that does quite well in that area. Depending on the species, some aspergillus molds can be harmful to human beings and some can cause any number of conditions that are collectively known as aspergillosis.

Aspergillosis symptoms can vary depending on the type of infection. In its allergic form, these symptoms can include coughing up blood or brown mucous, weight loss, shortness of breath, coughing, and fever, among others.

Aspergilloma, which are fungus growths in the body that are caused by mold, are typically found growing in the lungs, but can also grow in other parts of the body. They are usually found growing in pre-existing cavities in the lungs or other organs, such as when a person has had lung cancer, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, or other infections that cause them. A lot of the time when a person actually has aspergilloma somewhere in their body, they have no symptoms. When symptoms do finally show up, they sometimes include coughing up blood, fever, weight loss, and shortness of breath. Wheezing can also be heard in some patients. Some tests that can be done to test for aspergilloma are a chest x-ray, a bronchoscopy, or a blood test that can be done to find antibodies to fight off aspergillus mold.

Pulmonary aspergillosis of the invasive type is known to occur in people who have weakened immune systems and the symptoms of this can include blood in the urine, headaches, chest pain, meningitis, sinusitis, and shortness of breath, among others. Chest x-rays, skin tests, and blood counts are a few of the methods that can be used to test for it.

Pulmonary aspergillosis causes some inflammation of the esophagus and the air sacs located within the lungs. Aspergillus mold is a common genus and so infections that are a direct result of touching it or inhaling it are possible, but rare. Some people are hypersensitive to the presence of aspergillus mold and have an allergic reaction and this may imitate such conditions as pneumonia or even asthma because a lot of the time patients that have allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) also have asthma.
